“Ten Thousand Years of Sex”: a book about the history of human sexuality, told in a hundred episodes from many cultures since the Neolithic Age – from the invention of monogamy back then to the invention of Viagra in more recent times.

A respectful history of sexuality

How do you tell the story of 10,000 years of human sexuality without slipping into clichés, stale humour or cultural simplifications? Our approach was to be curious, detailed and respectful. In a hundred episodes from ancient Egypt to cyberspace we opened the windows to different cultures and showed how diverse people have lived their lust, intimacy and identity.

We were interested in what is irritating and surprising: that older women enjoyed special freedoms in the Aztec culture; why cunnilingus was frowned upon in ancient Rome but Emperor Tiberius ignored that; and what space queer practices had historically. We unearthed details that bring history to life – and tell these stories with clarity and empathy but no voyeurism or pathos.

That the book has been called “feminist” we take as a compliment. That “Ten Thousand Years of Sex” has now been translated into three languages fills us with a bit of pride.
