Polarisation, pressure, personal hostility: The tone has become harsher in many city and local councils. “Respect in the Council” focuses on a new form of political culture that is constructive, respectful and dialogue-oriented.

Dare to show more respect

“Respect in the Council” is a Körber Foundation project to improve the culture of discussion in Germany’s local politics. The need is great since almost half of all councillors say the tone and atmosphere in the committees is negative. Municipalities taking part in the “Respect in the Council” project developed a communication code in a moderated series of workshops – and received a toolbox for resolving conflicts constructively.

Local politics is the basis of democracy

Nansen & Piccard developed the web platform in collaboration with the Körber Foundation and provided editorial support. We were responsible for the content and design concept, programming and journalistic implementation – with infographics, interviews and reports.

To bring the project to life, a team of reporters travelled to Neubrandenburg and other municipalities, spoke to local politicians and documented the impact of “Respect in the Council” on the ground.
