German Academic Exchange Service

We produced a magazine about the DAAD University Programs for Refugees that demonstrates how integration at German universities can actually succeed – with real stories, clear facts and strong images.

How does integration work?

For seven years, the DAAD University Programs for Refugees have enabled young people from crisis regions to study in Germany – and build a new life.

The anniversary magazine of around a hundred pages was divided into four chapters: “Arriving”, “Studying”, “Life” and “Working”. In each section, we told the story of one participant – in an up-close, open, precise way. The renowned journalist Linda Tutmann accompanied the project as the external editor-in-chief and was herself supported by the program participants, who contributed to the texts and editorial concept.

The photo spreads by Julian Baumann, Tanja Kernweiss and Urban Zintel gave the magazine its distinctive visual character. The reports were complemented by compact fact pages that revealed what universities, teachers and students have achieved together.

A magazine that made commitment visible, explained complexity and showed how integration can actually succeed.
